INTRODUCTION TO WEB 3.0

--

Web 3.0 decentralised web

Web 3.0 is the third generation of internet services, It is an open web that is built on open source software by developers.

It took about 10 years to move from web 1 to web 2 and finally to web 3.0

Web 3 provides Decentralized applications and infrastructure that is gradually replacing web 2.0 which is centralized. It has no central control of authority or middle men, as it is realizing the future of a truly open web. Web 3.0 permits data ownership, control and security.

Web 3.0 usually referred to as the semantic web is bringing about a new era and realizing the future of the open web.

Lets take examples of web 2.0 and web 3.0

Web 2.0 an uber app that uses location and google map to get you a ride

Web 3.0 apple’s siri that uses voice to take instructions and give feedback

This web makes use of artificial intelligence and 3D images to produce brilliant and advanced web applications and websites.

Near is the only blockchain that has developed to the extent of meeting the needs of an open web.

Advantages of web 3.0 includes:

  1. Efficient web searches and services which makes life easier
  2. Security of data
  3. Privacy and secured interactions with unknown parties
  4. Less pay due to elimination of middle-men and central authority
  5. No interruption of services[elimination of unnecessary ads]
  6. Internet can be personalised

Exploring Decentralized social media on NEAR Protocol

Social media has been centralized for ages and I believe that trend is gradually changing with the advent of blockchain technology. Decentralization is gradually taking over as we now have Decentralized finance, Decentralized applications, Decentralized exchanges.

A Decentralized social media is built on the blockchain, and as you would expect it is not controlled by a single entity or organisation. Data is stored across various nodes all over the world and interactions and information of users are encrypted.

Near protocol also being decentralized, stores data securely and it puts the users in control of their data.

Centralized social media as we can see has a lot of potholes as many a times user data are being sold to businesses and can be used for political purposes, centralized social media platforms sometimes use data of users for marketing purposes without the users knowledge, reasons why decentralized social media apps is a good solution and replacement.

A Decentralized social media platform offers personal data ownership and security and can even provide incentives to content creators.

Decentralized social media apps are gradually gaining popularity as decentralization is taken over in all aspect of the tech industry.

With a Decentralised Social media built on NEAR we can easily integrate the NEAR wallet such that users can easily transfer NEAR tokens to family and friends, pay for services as well.

Possible setbacks could include:

● Regulatory challenges across many centralised government and institutions

● Community acceptance

I believe NEAR developers need to explore bringing Decentralized social media to NEAR protocol since NEAR is the most scalable, efficient, climate neutral and developer friendly platform.
